¡Arriba!
We remove the language barrier that impedes education.
Why we started this
On average, every state has about 10% of students who can't speak any English. The average classroom size in the U.S. is about 20 people, which would be like if 2 people in every class you took couldn't speak a word of English and therefore, couldn't interact with you, the teacher, or the learning material.
Our mission is to empower every student to fulfill their potential, and not let the English language barrier inhibit them from succeeding.
This program helps non-native English speaking students to do more advanced work and thereby build higher career trajectories. Specifically, we want to help them take advantage of AP classes. Currently, we are helping students across the state. The goal of Arriba is to create a widely accessible program that can be scaled by leveraging motivated bilingual students who want to help others overcome a language barrier. Through this program, we intend to increase the percentage of English Language Learners in AP classes.

How we work

Tutors post their homemade resources and videos to the Classroom so that tutees can access them. The Google Calendar is available for tutors and tutees to arrange for live sessions.

Hear from our students
"I decided to try Arriba tutoring because I thought it would really help with my mathematical skills. The ELD tutor at my school mentioned the program, Arriba, and how it could really help with my math skills. Throughout the time my Arriba tutor was tutoring me, I gained a better understanding of math concepts, which prepared me for my algebra class this fall.
To be honest, my tutor, Isabelle, was a really nice person but I would have liked to know more about her. I liked how she gave me not too much homework, but not too little so I wouldn't forget the concept. I think what made her an effective tutor was the way she would teach me. Isabelle was really good at giving clear explanations. Also, it was helpful that I could see her work on the screen and not on a piece of paper. Overall I would recommend Arriba to other students because it could really help with their future success in school if they are struggling with a certain topic. "

"To be honest, Arriba is a really good program. It helps to improve your English. This program was created by students from Woodside High School, and the tutors are really hard workers and teach English with some good methods. I really believe this program is the best program with English learning speakers."
